The Illustrated London News Historical Archive 1842-2003, recently acquired by the Library, provides unprecedented access to historical, social, cultural and political source material, invaluable for cross-disciplinary research.

The Illustrated London News was the world’s first fully illustrated weekly newspaper, providing a unique visual archive of Britain and the world, from the early Victorian era to the end of the 20th Century.

The Historical Archive offers 260,000 searchable pages and over 1.5 million accomplished engravings, sketches and photographs, which act as an 'eyewitness to the past'.

It presents a vivid picture of British and world events, coverings topics as diverse as the arts, ceremonies, disasters, scientific discoveries, expeditions, and wars - the French Revolution in 1848, the Maori football tour of 1888, the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, the opening of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1923, and world events up to 2003.
