The National Library of Scotland has launched a website for their popular collection of over 700 digitised Scottish Post Office
directories, dating from 1773 to 1911.
- browse and search through all the directories at once, by title, year and residents' names
- find out where people lived at a certain time and how they earned their living
- consult the different types of directories and see the use of illustrations and advertisements featured
- discover interesting facts and figures about local statistics, the beginning of commercial photography, Dundee's whale fishing industry, the development of Scotland's shipping industry, etc
NB: this is a valuable resource for anyone researching family, trade and social history - especially for the years not
covered by the Census which began in 1841, and was carried out at 10-year intervals
