New e-Resource - Italian Reformation

A reminder that we have access to the Italian Reformation, Part 1 (Primary Sources Online) database.

This is a collection of main primary texts which summarise the diversity of the theological profile of the Italian Reformation, as held by the Fondo Guicciardini, Central National Library, Florence.

Research has shown that the Italian Reformation movement spread widely, reaching not only clerical, intellectual and aristocratic elites in the cities but also merchants, artisans, and farmers, even in remote areas of Calabria and Sicily.

145 e-book records covering this early printed book and manuscript content have been added to SAULCAT.

This e-resource helps to promote a deeper understanding of Italian Reformation history.

New e-Resource - Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE)

Meet JoVE (The Journal of Visualized Experiments) - the world's first scientific video journal for biological, medical, chemical and physical research.

We have access to the JoVE General module.

JoVE is the first online journal devoted to the video publication of biological research as a medium for learning, teaching and research. It explains experimental techniques and procedures through a novel combination of peer-reviewed video and text.

The videos are filmed in research laboratories at leading academic institutions, including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Berkeley, Yale, etc. Around 50 new videos are published every month.

EU Screen Portal - lost TV archives from across Europe

EUscreen is a new online portal, providing free access to thousands of items of archive TV footage.

It offers videos, stills, texts and audio from European broadcasters and audiovisual archives, from the early 1900s to the present day.

It results from a groundbreaking collaboration of 36 partners from 19 countries, including the British Universities Film and Video Council (BUFVC).

Content can be used in many different ways - in teaching and research programmes; for exploring popular and social history, the history of Europe and the history of television; by providing new and exciting insights into Europe’s TV heritage; by offering news and commentary on key events in history, etc.

NB: EUscreen is also very valuable as a language-teaching tool - it offers a wealth of news footage and programmes in over 15 languages, including French, German, Italian and Greek - and can help with pronunciation practice and listening skills

New Database - Film and Television Literature Index with Full Text

A reminder that we have access to the Film and Television Literature Index with Full Text database.

FTLI is a comprehensive bibliographic and full-text database covering the entire spectrum of film and television, and has been described as 'the definitive online tool for film and television research'.

It provides the full text of over 120 journals and 100 books, and also indexes over 380 journals and gives abstracts (summaries) of their content.

Subject coverage includes Film and Television Theory; Preservation and Restoration; Writing; Production; Cinematography; Technical Aspects; Reviews, etc.

It also includes Variety movie reviews from 1914 to the present, and over 36,300 images from the MPTV Image Archive.

NB: FTLI complements the Film Indexes Online database, which consists of Film Index International, the FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals and the American Film Institute (AFI) Catalog

Dissertations and Theses database - now Full-Text

Our subscription to the Proquest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) database has been upgraded to the full-text version, for 2012. Until now, we had access to 24-page previews only.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses with Full Text is a comprehensive collection of international dissertations and theses.

It includes over 1.2 million full text dissertations that you can download in PDF form. PQDT offers the full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997, and also for many older theses. More than 70,000 new full text dissertations are added every year.

As well as providing full-text, PQDT also includes 2.7 million searchable citations to international dissertations and theses, from 1861 to the present day, so is an excellent finding tool for relevant theses.

N.B: you also have access to the Index to Theses database which provides a comprehensive list of higher degree theses accepted by UK and Irish Universities, since 1716.

Over 16,000 new theses are added annually, and Index to Theses also provides links to over 50,000 full text theses freely available from University repositories, or from the British Library's EThOS online theses site

Important Changes to Management Databases

Please be aware that our access to the Emerald Fulltext database will end on 31 December 2011.

Staff and teaching in the School of Management have changed a great deal since we first subscribed to Emerald in 2003, and the fact that teaching and research emphases now lie elsewhere was the catalyst for the School's decision to investigate alternative subject databases.

We will retain perpetual access to the Emerald backfiles (more than 100 years of management research), the Emerald Business, Management and Economics eBook Series Collection, and the Emerald Social Sciences eBook Series Collection. All the titles in these collections are listed in SAULCAT.

This focus on new areas of teaching and research has led to a number of new business and management databases being purchased in the last year:

The British Newspaper Archive - read all about it and other newspapers!

The British Newspaper Archive has received much press coverage since it became available at the end of November.

The British Library has partnered with brightsolid online publishing, to digitise up to 40 million newspaper pages from the BL's vast newspaper collection, over the next 10 years.

**The archive offers full-text access to hundreds of historic UK regional newspapers, published between 1700-1940.** 65 million newspaper articles, covering the most significant events of the last 300 years, are now available.

At present, the British Newspaper Archive is aimed at personal subscribers. You can search the site for free, but full-text access costs £6.95 for 48 hour access; £29.95 for 30 days, or £79.95 for an annual subscription. There is no institutional subscription available yet.

Please note - the Library has access to an equivalent database in Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers

We have trial access to the International Studies Online database, the online version of the 12-volume International Studies Encyclopedia, until 14 December 2011.

International Studies Online is the result of The International Studies Compendium Project, published in association with the International Studies Association.

It is is the 'first major reference work of this scale' in international studies and international relations.

Missed a TV programme, aired between 1995-2006, that you wanted for teaching or research? - we may be able to get a DVD copy for you.

All you need to do is:

login to TRILT, the Television and Radio Index for Learning and Teaching database
use your University account details
identify programmes from BBC1-4, ITV1, C4 or C5
and request a free DVD copy, via TRILT, if it is available

TRILT lists programmes back to 1995, and supplements BoB (Box of Broadcasts) National, the TV/radio streaming service which covers programmes between 2006-present.

Once received, DVDs are held in the Library's extensive DVD collection on Level 2, and details added to SAULCAT. They can be viewed in the Library or borrowed for teaching.

Royal Society journal archive - now freely accessible

The Royal Society has made its world-renowned journal archive, freely accessible, on a permanent basis.

The Society is the world’s oldest scientific publisher, with Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the very first peer-reviewed scientific journal, appearing in 1665.

The archive offers over 60,000 full-text scientific papers, and provides an unrivalled historical record of the evolution of science, that spans nearly 350 years.

Treasures in the archive include Isaac Newton’s first published scientific paper, geological work by a young Charles Darwin, and Benjamin Franklin’s celebrated account of his electrical kite experiment.

State Papers Online 1509-1714 is a large digital manuscript archive offering over 3 million pages of 16th and 17th Century State Papers (Domestic, Foreign, Scotland, Ireland) and Registers of the Privy Council, relevant to research in political, governmental, social, economic, and religious history (factsheet).

State Papers Online Part IV covers the 17th Century, one of the most turbulent periods of transition and unrest in British and European history. It offers a wealth of full-text primary source documents which detail great international themes of this time - the Thirty Years’ War, the Great Turkish War, the end of the Dutch Revolt, the English Civil War, etc.

We now have access to the Film Indexes Online database, an authoritative research resource for cinema and film studies. It also covers history, literature, music and performing arts resources.

FIO consists of Film Index International, the FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals and the American Film Institute (AFI) Catalog. These important resources can be cross-searched or searched independently.

Film Index International

a comprehensive filmography, from 1900 to the present. Covers more than 125,000 films and 800,000 film personalities, from over 180 countries. Includes information on film awards, searchable plot summaries, cast and crew lists, plus film synopses and production details.

The FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals (Plus)

almost 400,000 article references from nearly 340 academic and popular film journals, between 1972 to the present. Provides expert international contributions on film preservation, cataloguing and documentation. Also offers over 85,000 full-text articles from approx 40 key journals.

The American Film Institute (AFI) Catalog

a national filmography, documenting the history of American cinema. Over 17,500 entries cover the early years of American film from 1893-1910, and the 48,000+ films produced between 1893-1974. Provides full production and cast information, extensive plot summaries, etc.

This resource contains the full-text of all published U.S. Congressional hearings held, from 1824 - present. It also contains unpublished hearings held prior to 1973 (House), and prior to 1984 (Senate).

Hearings cover a wide range of topics, including foreign and domestic policy, science and technology, medicine, national defence, business, and social issues. They contain full transcripts of the proceedings, including oral and written statements, question and answer sessions with Members of Congress, discussions, and other material such as articles, reports, correspondence, etc.

This resource forms an unparalleled documentary record of events and public policy issues faced by America, as well as the objectives and actions of Congress in dealing with these.

SEEKER Snippet 12: why isn't full-text available for all search results?

SEEKER searches across a wide range of the Library's online database subscriptions, as well as SAULCAT, the Library catalogue.

Many of these databases provide full-text search results, but not all - some are specialised indexing or abstracting databases, which can help you discover published research in a certain area.

Indexing databases - such as Philosopher's Index - index the content of many journals, usually in a specific subject, and provide bibliographic details (author, title, article details) of published secondary source material. Abstracting databases - such as Historical Abstracts - also provide a brief summary (abstract) of the article.

Comprehensive research, especially at advanced level, will involve searching across a range of resources, not only ones which provide full-text.

Most SEEKER search results will link to full-text where we have access; however, since thousands of journals are covered by the indexing and abstracting databases included in SEEKER, it's inevitable that there will be some journals that we don't have full-text access to.

NB: You can limit your SEEKER search results to full-text or available material only by using the ‘Refine your Results’ checkboxes (to the left of your SEEKER search results)

New e-Resource - African Writers Series

We have recently acquired permanent online access to the African Writers Series database.

It includes over 250 volumes of fiction, poetry, drama and non-fictional prose, including works by Achebe, Biko, Emecheta, Gordimer, Head, Lessing, Mandela, etc.

Between 1962-2003, Heinemann published key texts covering the whole historical range of modern African literature, and this collection forms the African Writers Series database.

Content includes work by all the major authors of this period, classic earlier texts and new writing, giving the collection a unique importance in the history of postcolonial writing. Much of the content is out of print.

African Writers Series is accessed through Literature Online (LION), and can be cross-searched with the other LION databases.

Links into the individual titles are being added to SAULCAT, the Library catalogue.

New E-Resource - The Cecil Papers

Following a successful trial, we now have permanent access to The Cecil Papers database.

The Cecil Papers form an archive of 16th and 17th century manuscripts, privately held by the Gascoyne-Cecil family at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.

It contains nearly 30,000 documents gathered by William Cecil, Lord Burghley (1520-1598) and his son Robert Cecil, the 1st Earl of Salisbury (1563-1612), both Secretary of State to Elizabeth I.

Early Music Online - over 300 volumes of 16th Century music

Early Music Online contains more than 300 digitised volumes of 16th century music - some of the world's earliest surviving volumes of printed music - held in the British Library.

These anthologies of printed music contain approximately 10,000 musical compositions. They mainly consist of partbooks of vocal polyphony, but also include some early printed tablatures for keyboard or plucked string instruments. They include music printed in Italy, Germany, France and England.

Highlights of the collection include:

church music by the Flemish composer Josquin des Prez
and the English musicians Thomas Tallis and William Byrd
drinking-songs from Nuremberg
love-songs from Lyon
lute music from Venice and organ music from Leipzig

Oxford Scholarship Online - access problems

The Oxford Scholarship Online interface has just been re-launched, but this has resulted in some access issues with the site.

Many OSO e-book links in SAULCAT are not resolving correctly, due to this change, neither are chapter-level DOIs. Off-campus access has also been affected.

OUP apologises for this inconvenience - their technical staff are taking immediate steps to resolve these issues.

Hansard - now included in House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP) database

The full-text of Hansard (1803-2005), is now included in the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP) database.

Hansard (the Official Report) is the edited verbatim report of proceedings of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

It provides a record of parliamentary debates and questions, including written ministerial statements and answers to parliamentary questions, as well as transcripts of the debates. Each Hansard record corresponds to a day’s sitting or written answers, usually covering several topics.

This important enhancement to HCPP enables Hansard to be cross-searched with the Sessional Papers of the House of Commons.

Hansard can also be browsed by date or Member.

SciFinder is a research tool that allows you to explore Chemical Abstracts Service databases containing biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science literature, etc.

To access, please register for the web version of SciFinder, and choose your own Username and Password. Login using your University Computer Account Username and Password, then register with your University e-mail address.

British Cartoon Archive - now includes Giles Archive of political cartoons

Over 15,000 cartoons from the Carl Giles Archive, held in the British Cartoon Archive at the University of Kent, have been digitised and made available for teaching, learning and research.

The Giles Collection is the single most important archive of British newspaper cartoons, and a major resource for British political and social history. It includes rare seaside postcards as well as political cartoons.

This JISC-funded digitisation project expands the holdings of the British Cartoon Archive which holds the national collection of British social and political cartoons.

This archive already represents the work of over 250 British cartoonists and is widely used for research and teaching. The Giles Collection is cross-searchable with the 123,000 other images in this archive.

This series has long been known for its scholarly and accessible texts of world literature.

New e-Resource - complete JSTOR Collection now available

We now have access to the complete JSTOR database - the three remaining JSTOR full-text e-journal collections have recently been subscribed to.

JSTOR (Journal STORage) archives over 2,000 leading digitised scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, from volume 1 onward, in order to support scholarship and teaching.

Most journals have a 3-5 year moving wall between the content in JSTOR and the current published issue, designed to protect the revenue publishers make from the sales of current issues.

The three additional collections are:

Arts and Sciences VI - 120 titles

predominantly social sciences titles, with the focus on economics, education, linguistics, political science, and area studies.

Arts and Sciences VIII - 140 titles (pdf flyer)

mainly core humanities titles, focusing on art and art history, classical studies, education, history, language and literature, and music. Some rare 19th and early 20th century American Art periodicals are included.

Arts and Sciences IX - to be 150 titles (collection overview)

JISC Historic Books is the new platform which enables you to cross-search over 300,000 books from the following permanent-access, historic books archives:

EEBO (Early English Books Online)
the scanned images of more than 125,000 titles published between 1473 and 1700, starting with the earliest printed works in the English language

ECCO (Eighteenth Century Collections Online)
all books published in Great Britain and its colonies during the 18th Century, along with thousands of important works from the Americas - more than 180,000 titles in total

plus the following unique titles, never before available online:

Nineteenth Century Books from the British Library collection
more than 65,000 digitised first editions from the 19th Century, in philosophy, history, poetry and literature - over 25 million pages of previously rare and inaccessible content

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) provides quantitative data that supports a systematic, objective means of evaluating and comparing the world's leading journals. The results are published every year, and the 2010 results are now available.

The 2010 JCR includes:

over 10,000 of the world’s most highly cited, peer-reviewed journals in 238 disciplines
nearly 2,500 publishers and 84 countries represented
more than 1,300 regional journals
1,075 journals receiving their first Journal Impact Factor (the 2010 Impact Factor for a journal is the average number of 2010 citations to articles published in a journal during 2008 and 2009)

JCR provides other metrics such as journals by Subject Category, Publisher and Country lists and rankings

Wellcome Arabic Medical Manuscripts - now online

The Wellcome Library’s collection of over 1,000 Arabic medical manuscripts will be fully online over the summer. Over 120 manuscript records are currently available to view.

Arabic medicine was once the most advanced in the world and complete digital facsimiles of some of its most important texts are now freely available online.

The manuscripts can be searched or browsed, and compared side-by-side on the screen to highlight any differences.

A welcome addition to our e-resources collection is British Literary Manuscripts Online: Medieval and Renaissance.

This unique digital archive offers permanent access to hundreds of thousands of facsimile images of literary manuscripts - letters, poems, stories, plays, chronicles, religious writings, and other material, from between 1120 - 1660. (more detail)

It covers the works of more than 1,000 authors and provides insights into the culture and context surrounding centuries of British literary achievement. This period witnessed the movement of literature from the elite to the masses, and revolutionary changes in society, religion, commerce and culture.

This collection includes many rare and previously inaccessible works from the British Library, and many of the Harvester Microfilm collections of manuscripts. Highlights include:

It contains digital versions of the only five major family letter collections from 15th Century England.

The Paston, Cely, Plumpton, Stonor and Armburgh family papers document, and offer insights into, the world of medieval family, business, relationships, trade, politics and community - from arranging advantageous marriages and inheritance, to estate management and financial dealings, to women and their role within the family.

Full colour images of the original medieval manuscripts that comprise these letter collections are provided, together with full text searchable transcripts from the printed editions, where available. You can view the original images and the transcripts, side by side.

Additional resources include a chronology, a glossary, a gallery of medieval images and interactive map, family trees, links to related scholarly websites, etc., and make this a valuable teaching and research resource.

Darwin's personal library goes online

Charles Darwin's personal scientific library is now viewable online.

His library of 1,480 books includes 730 with notes and comments scribbled in their margins. These are now being digitised, and 330 of the most heavily annotated books can now be viewed online at the Biodiversity Heritage Library.

Although SAULCAT, the Library catalogue, is temporarily unavailable due to server upgrade issues, it's worth noting that SEEKER, our new search service, can be used to identify and allow access to the Library's e-books.

Links from SEEKER into SAULCAT aren't active at the moment, but access to our thousands of e-books is working normally.

You can also use COPAC to check the holdings and location of an item, although details of current loan status and online recalls will only be available once the SAULCAT server upgrade has been resolved.

The ODNB is a fascinating resource. It contains nearly 57,800 commissioned biographies of the people who 'shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond, from the 4th century BC to the 21st Century'.

It includes over 10,820 portraits, featured essays, themed collections of biographies, links to web resources such as the National Register of Archives, a Life of the Day feature, RSS feeds, etc.

It also now offers a podcast of a biography, every two weeks. Each one lasts between 10 and 25 minutes.

125 podcasts are currently available - from Jimi Hendrix and Sweeney Todd, the murderer, to Princess Caraboo, nineteenth century impostor, and Captain Oates, Antarctic explorer.

Simply type in a search term and replace the ending with an asterisk (*).

We currently have a short trial of Unbound Medicine, an innovative collection of clinical e-textbook titles developed as interactive apps for mobile devices. The trial will run until 30 June 2011.

E-texts can be downloaded - using an app from iTunes - to a range of mobiles, including iOS (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad), Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, etc. The texts can also be accessed online, and also searched with Medline.

once you see your search results, click on Content Provider (bottom of left-hand menu)

check the boxes next to the database(s) you want to see the search results from, and click on Update
only results from your selected database(s) will then be shown

Pearls of Wisdom - OAIster open-access content now included in SEEKER

OAIster content can now be retrieved with a SEEKER search, and cross-searched with other databases.

OIAster is a repository of over 25 million records of digital resources from more than 1,100 open-archive collections worldwide.

It harvests Open Archives Initiative (OAI)-compliant Institutional Repositories worldwide, and is updated regularly. The result is a collection of freely available, easily searchable, scholarly digital primary source materials.

OAIster covers a wide range of subjects and materials, including digitised (scanned) books, journal articles, newspapers, manuscripts, digital text, audio and video files, photographic images, data sets (downloadable statistical information), theses and research papers, etc.

The results of any SEEKER search will now include OIAster material and provide links into this full-text, open access content.

When the Library building re-opens at the end of September 2011, your access to Datastream will transfer back to PCs in the Main Library.

The British Library, the UK's national library, is currently formulating a digital scholarship strategy, in order to plan effectively for the future needs of researchers in the digital age.

Like many other Universities, we will be using University account details for off-campus access to the e-resources that we buy. We already use University account details for off-campus logins to many e-resources, and to SEEKER.

If you usually login through your MyATHENS account, you'll notice some databases will disappear from the list of available resources, over the next few weeks - this will NOT mean that we no longer have access to them; it will simply mean that ATHENS is no longer used, and that you will use your University account details for off-campus access, instead.

All databases will be accessible through the A-Z Databases page and SAULCAT, and access details will be altered on these, and on the E-Journals pages, as the off-campus access method changes for each e-resource.

SAULCAT upgrade is now complete

SAULCAT server upgrade issues have been now resolved and normal service has resumed. SAULCAT, the Library catalogue, is now available and recalls of Library material can be made.

The Library apologises for the inconvenience caused by this unplanned downtime.

SEEKER Snippet 6: the use of truncation in searching

In SEEKER, you can search for all forms of a word, using a truncation symbol.

Simply type in a search term and replace the ending with an asterisk (*).

**The archive offers full-text access to hundreds of historic UK regional newspapers, published between 1700-1940.** 65 million newspaper articles, covering the most significant events of the last 300 years, are now available.

ScienceDirect display issue - some users are not seeing their search results displayed when they access ScienceDirect from off-campus.

This is currently being investigated. A message will be posted on the Library's Twitter and Facebook pages, once it has been resolved.

The Merck Manual of Patient Symptoms
allows quick review of etiology, evaluation, and immediate treatment of 88 presenting symptoms, etc.

Use SAULCAT to quickly find out if the Library holds a specific book or journal, and to recall books, check your Library Record, etc.

Try the same search in both, to see the wide difference in the number of results you get.
